Alleppey known as ‘Venice of the East’ is the only place on earth where one could see such a fascinating network of canals and lagoons cress-crossing the centre of town, on which thatch-covered country boats punt along at leisure.
Over the years, Alappuzha has evolved as the major spot for backwater tourism in Kerala. Now a day’s one could see the fascinating houseboats (kettuvallams) which were once former Cargo boats, now restructured and fitted with all amenities. There will be a cook and 2 oarsmen to assist the guest in the boat. All food are cooked and served inside the boat where one could spend the night.
Nehru Trophy Boat Race is a major cultural event in Alappuzha which attracts international attention. Other important cultural and religious festivals include Chambakkulam Moolam boat race and Chettikulangara Bharani.Often referred to as the rice-bowl of Kerala, Kuttanad is a vibrant backwater hamlet comparable to Venice is located in Alleppey.
